Operation Smile's vision is that no child in the world should be violated or forced to live hidden away due to a treatable cleft lip etc. Thanks to medical volunteers, who share their time and knowledge, children in developing countries with particular cleft lip are offered surgery for this at no cost. Since the beginning, over 160,000 children and young people worldwide had this surgery.
 
Operation Smile is currently active in 60 countries and this January the organization also launched in Sweden in order to raise money for the international activities and to recruit Swedish health care staff as volunteers. During Operation Smile's so called medical missions medical volunteers from around the world are gathered to make surgery on children with cleft lip who would not otherwise get any help. The team includes surgeons, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, anesthetists nurses, ICU nurses, dental specialists, speech therapists and other skills.
 
The medical missions are always attended by local medical staff and the whole thing is done in collaboration with health and healthcare in the country. The long term goal of Operation Smile is that, by training local medical personnel and assistance with financing, building up local, self-supporting clinics.
